Mandy Schaumburg has been involved in Federal policy for more than 20 years. She spent the majority of that time working on education and human services policy at the Committee on Education and the Workforce, finishing her time there as the Chief Counsel and Deputy Director of Education Policy. At the Committee, Schaumburg worked for four different Republican Chairmen and was involved in numerous legislative projects including the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, the Juvenile Justice Reform Act and national school meal laws.
In her role as Deputy Education Director, Schaumburg worked with Committee staff to help write and negotiate legislation. Additionally, she was the lead staff for several issues, which included organizing hearings, writing legislation and helping move bills through the legislative process. Her lead issues included K-12 policy, child care, child nutrition, juvenile justice reform, student privacy, oversight and other human services programs such as child abuse prevention and treatment and family violence prevention.
Before joining the Committee, Schaumburg spent a few years working for her hometown Congressman, Mark Green (R-WI). As the legal counsel in the office, Schaumburg focused on judiciary issues, staffing the Congressman’s judiciary work. She also helped him establish a bipartisan faith-based coalition.
In addition, Schaumburg spent two years working at the U.S. Department of Education, ending her tenure as a Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office of Planning, Evaluation, and Policy Development. At the Department, Schaumburg worked on regulations, the implementation of pilot projects and general K-12 policy matters including student privacy, private schools and charter schools.
Schaumburg got her start in government working for Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson as Deputy Legal Counsel. Schaumburg continued her work in the Governor’s office for Governor Scott McCallum, where she was eventually promoted to Legal Counsel. There she reviewed contracts, clemency requests, open records requests and supported the Governor and staff as needed.
Schaumburg has a Bachelor of Art’s degree in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and a Juris Doctor degree from Hamline University School of Law in Minnesota.
