CONGRESS

The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Rules is scheduled to meet on Monday, November 13 to provide for floor consideration of the House fiscal year (FY) 2024 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies (LHHS) bill.

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce reported H.R. 5993, the Defending Education Transparency and Ending Rogue Regimes Engaging in Nefarious Transactions (DETERRENT) Act, favorably to the full House on a 27-11 vote.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) filed cloture on a legislative vehicle that would allow the Senate to move a continuing resolution next week.

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) announced that he will not seek reelection in 2024.

ADMINISTRATION

The White House released a fact sheet on the Biden Administration’s investments in child care and its call for additional child care stabilization funding.

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) completed the second of three negotiated rulemaking sessions on student loan debt.

ED sent a Dear Colleague Letter to K-12 schools and institutions of higher education highlighting their obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to provide a school environment free from discrimination based on race, color or national origin.

ED released new data on Federal student loan borrowers’ participation in the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) income-driven repayment plan.
