CONGRESS

U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives leadership announced a framework for a fiscal year (FY) 2024 appropriations package.

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce held a markup of H.R. 6914, the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act and reported the bill favorably to the full House on a 24-17 vote.

House Committee on Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) wrote a letter to Harvard University requesting documents in accordance with a Committee investigation into the university’s response to reports of antisemitism on its campus.

House Committee on Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith (R-MO) sent a letter to four institutions of higher education regarding their tax exemption status.

House Committee on Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) introduced H.R. 6951, the College Cost Reduction Act.

ADMINISTRATION

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) issued a press release announcing that the updated Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form will now be available 24/7.

ED concluded the first of three negotiated rulemaking sessions on institutional quality and program integrity.

ED announced that next month, it will begin early implementation of the loan forgiveness authority in the Saving a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan for borrowers who have 10 years of payments and originally borrowed $12,000 or less.
