CONGRESS

The U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S Senate are both in recess. The House will return on September 13 and the Senate will return on September 6.

ADMINISTRATION

The Biden Administration released the details of its plan on student loan forgiveness, an  extension of the pause on student loan repayment, interest and collections through December 31, 2022, changes to Income-Driven Repayment and debt-related accountability measures for institutions of higher education.

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced that approximately $10 billion in student loan debt relief has been approved through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

ED released a Back-to-School checklist for parents which included examples of States and school districts using American Rescue Plan funds to support students and to staff schools.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a prepublished version of its final rule on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). The rule is scheduled to be published in the Federal Register on August 30.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a statement on the investigation into bomb threats received by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The White House held a meeting with college presidents, campus health officials and student affairs professionals on Monkeypox and COVID-19.
