PENN HILL GROUP’S WRAP UP – SEPTEMBER 5, 2023

A quick look back at the news from last week. Compiled by Penn Hill Group.

CONGRESS

The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Rules announced that the Committee may meet the week of September 11 to consider rules for floor action on the fiscal year 2024 Departments of Defense and Homeland Security Appropriations bills, signaling likely action on these bills when the House returns from the August district work period.

ADMINISTRATION

The White House released a fact sheet chronicling the Biden Administration’s efforts to “support K-12 Education as students go back-to-school.”

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) issued a notice in the Federal Register requesting nominations for its forthcoming negotiated rulemaking effort pertaining to the modification, waiver, release, or compromise of Federal student loans under Title IV of the Higher Education Act. Comments are due on or before September 14, 2023.

The Administration officially requested that Congress include a provision (typically referred to as an anomaly) in a forthcoming continuing resolution (CR) that would permit Federal Student Aid to expend funding during the period of a CR at a faster rate than normally permitted for the functions of such office.

ED approved $72 billion in Borrower Defense to Repayment claims for former students of Ashford University.
