PENN HILL GROUP’S WRAP UP – AUGUST 21, 2023

A quick look back at the news from last week. Compiled by Penn Hill Group.

ADMINISTRATION

The U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) Office of Civil Rights and the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division jointly released a Dear Colleague Letter and a Questions and Answers Document providing guidance to institutions of higher education on understanding the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision on race and higher education admissions.

ED began discharging Federal student loans which were subject to payment count adjustments due to faulty record keeping practices by the agency. The issuing of these discharges came after a Federal judge dismissed, for lack of standing, a lawsuit seeking to prevent this action.

ED’s Office of the Chief Economist issued a report on graduate-level borrowing under the Federal student loan programs.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in partnership with ED, DOJ and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, launched a public awareness campaign to highlight Federal school safety resources and evidence-based practices available through SchoolSafety.gov.

ED transmitted the Gainful Employment rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget for review prior to its publication as a final rule.
