CONGRESS
U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations Chairwoman Kay Granger (R-TX) announced that House Republicans would draft fiscal year (FY) 2024 appropriations legislation at final overall FY 2022 spending levels.
The House Committee on Education and the Workforce passed the “Schools not Shelters Act” on a 20-16 vote.
U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Ranking Member Bill Cassidy (R-LA) announced the introduction of the “Lowering Education Costs and Debt Act,” which packages the previously introduced College Transparency Act with four other pieces of legislation.
House Committee on Education and the Workforce Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development Chairman Burgess Owens (R-UT) sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona regarding concerns with self-certification of income on student loan debt relief applications.
The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Rules will meet on Tuesday, June 20 to consider a rule for “H. Res. 461, Condemning the use of elementary and secondary school facilities to provide shelter for aliens who are not admitted to the United States.” The House is expected to consider this legislation during the week of June 19.
ADMINISTRATION
The U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced the “Online for All” campaign which aims to assist families in accessing affordable high-speed internet.
This week, ED added a banner to the top of StudentAid.gov indicating that Federal student loan interest accrual would resume starting on Sept. 1, 2023, and payments on Federal student loans would be due starting in October.
The Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget has completed its review of the Administration’s forthcoming Income-Drive Repayment rule. This clears the rule for publication in final form in the coming days.
