PENN HILL GROUP’S WRAP UP – September 5, 2022

CONGRESS

The U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S Senate are both in recess. The House will return on September 13 and the Senate will return next week on September 6.

ADMINISTRATION

Late last week, White House officials announced that the application for the student loan forgiveness plan previously unveiled by the Administration would be available in early October and forgiveness would be applied within four to six weeks after an application is submitted.

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) issued updated guidance regarding access by the public to Federal funded research.

The National Center for Education Statistics released the results of a special administration of the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) long-term trend reading and math assessments for 9-year-olds. The assessment was intended to examine student achievement during the pandemic. The results showed the largest average score decline in reading since 1990, and the first ever score decline in math.

President Biden signed the Ensuring the Best Schools for Veterans Act of 2022 into law, clarifying an exemption for colleges that must comply with the 85/15 rule administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The U.S. Department of Education announced that it will discharge all remaining federal student loans for borrowers who were enrolled at Westwood College between January 2022 and November 2015.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) issued a statement expressing concerns regarding the House Commerce Committee passed American Data Privacy and Protection Act.
