PENN HILL GROUP’S WRAP UP – SEPTEMBER 19, 2022

CONGRESS

The U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Education and Labor (Education and Labor) held a markup of three resolutions of inquiry focused on Public Service Loan Forgiveness and Income-Driven Repayment waiver costs, the authority of the Biden Administration to cancel student debt, and the reopening of K-12 schools. The Committee reported each of these resolutions unfavorably by a vote of 28 to 21.

Representative Virginia Foxx (R-NC) discussed the Republican higher education priorities  at an American Enterprises Institute event.

A group of 34 House Democrats sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, and U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Xavier Becerra urging the administration to form a new plan for student safety.

House Committee on Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer (R-KY) and Education and Labor Committee Ranking Member Virginia Foxx (R-NC) sent a letter to the White House Counsel regarding whether Biden Administration officials who worked on the Administrations’ recent loan forgiveness initiative would personally benefit financially.

ADMINISTRATION

The Biden Administration announced its “‘Back to School’ Drive to Help Students and Families Get Free High-Speed Internet.”

U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona completed his “Road to Success Back to School Bus Tour” today.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed an appeal to the injunction placed on the implementation of the U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) 2021 Title IX guidance.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and DOJ held a joint briefing and issued a press release regarding updates on the FBI’s investigation into bomb threats sent to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) this year.

Federal Student Aid updated its frequently asked questions regarding the Administration’s loan forgiveness initiative to include information on refunds of federal student loan payments made during the pandemic.

SUPREME COURT

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) granted the U.S. Solicitor General’s requests for the Biden Administration to present oral arguments in Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions v. University of North Carolina et. al.
