A quick look at the news from last week, compiled by Penn Hill Group: 

HOUSE

The House is in recess and will return on Tuesday, September 8.

SENATE

The Senate is in recess and will return on Tuesday, September 8.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee’s executive session scheduled for Thursday, August 6, has been postponed. The committee planned to consider several bills and nominations, including the nomination of Dr. Kathryn Matthew to Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

ADMINISTRATION

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) approved state waiver renewals under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) for Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Mississippi and Wisconsin. Alabama, Connecticut, Mississippi and Wisconsin each received a three-year renewal, and Arizona, Arkansas and New Hampshire each received a one-year renewal.
